A Personal Post: My Fall Family Tradition

Every Fall we take our boys out to pick Apples (and of course bring the camera along to capture some fun family photos). This year we went to Zekveld's Garden Market. My parents used to take my siblings and I there when we were young to pick apples and since moving back to Sarnia we thought we would take our kids there and try it out. It was great! The apples were huge and delicious and the boys had fun trying to find the biggest and reddest apples EVER!! The weather was beautiful and the sun was shining....

of course we all had to have a few bites of juicy, yummy apples while picking them.

And then we headed home to make our favorite Fall treat...

Its not Fall until we have made Apple Pan Dowdy. When I was little my siblings and I always watched The Elephant Show and the one of the songs was Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy.

If you wanna do right by your appetite,
If you're fussy about your food,

Take a choo-choo today, head new england way,
And we'll put you in the happiest mood. with:
Shoo fly pie and apple pan dowdy
Makes your eyes light up,
Your tummy say "howdy."
Shoo fly pie and apple pan dowdy
I never get enough of that wonderful stuff.
Shoo fly pie and apple pan dowdy makes the sun come out
When heavens are cloudy,
Shoo fly pie and apple pan dowdy,
I never get enough of that wonderful stuff!
Mama! when you bake,
Mama! I don't want cake;
Mama! for my sake
Go to the oven and make some ever lovin' sh,
Shoo fly pie and apple pan dowdy
Makes your eyes light up,
Your tummy say "howdy,"
Shoo fly pie and apple pan dowdy
I never get enough of that wonderful stuff! ~ Ellen Fitzgerald

My mom happened to find an Apple Pan Dowdy recipe and it became our favorite treat. I now make it with my kids and they love it too (although they don't quite get the story behind it.)

Josiah didn't want to get dirty so he wanted to wear the apron my grandma made for me. Then there is Luca who doesn't mind the mess, the more flour on him (and the floor) the better.

I was at a photography conference (I Heart Faces) recently and one of the workshops was by Susan Keller Photography and she specializes in Lifestyle Photography. At the conference she talked about not being afraid to get in the pictures with your children. Its more special when they look back at the pictures to have me in them than me just being behind the camera. They will be reminded of the time I spent WITH them than taking pictures of them. It doesn't matter if my house doesn't look perfect or my hair is messy. Its the combination of all the details that will remind them of that moment in time.

Served warm with vanilla ice cream....YUMM!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!! I hope you have a great Thanksgiving with your family and friends whether creating new traditions or continuing past traditions.
